Whether we like it or not, all the generation after the year 1940 have a company that is very difficult to break away from, that is television. Television can be a friend or a foe, depending on how we view it and depending on how we let it influence our life. But with regards to children, is television really an odd as usually perceived by our world? Children usually spend almost 6-8 hours of television per day, and here are some of the disadvantages that were identified: eye damage, hard to feed and do other tasks, watch violent or obscene scenes, don’t learn to talk, don’t learn to communicate, develop phobia and many more.
But come to think of it, those above mentioned effects have only one solution that is proper guidance since we are older and still in control of our children. Eye damage can be avoided if guardians won’t let children watch so close, feeding difficulties can be refrained if we establish a routine time for daily activities for our children, violent scenes can be oust if we do the so called “co-viewing” and lastly, communication hindrance is not a problem at all if we show our children interactive shows like Dora!
There are innumerable benefits if we just guide our children in watching televisions compared to those mentioned foes.
Here are some questions that we need to ask ourselves before showing our children a certain program: Does the program actively engage my child, physically or intellectually? Does my child see others like himself or herself on television? How do makers of this program regard my child? Do I respect this program?
With this questions, we will be guided to lead our children to this limitless benefits such as: sharing cultural experiences with others, having experiencing how rainforest, water-world, and even volcano peaks with some innovations such as 3D TVs, it can also serve as catalyst to keep children reading and enhance communication, and to learn the universal language, English especially to non English speaking country.
It helps parent discuss sensitive issues since children already have a background on it, another very good opportunity brought by television, is the education on screen which is implemented to deprived countries like India, Indonesia, and Philippines were teachers use television to assist their teaching, it can enhance children’s socialization. Kids are inspired to engage into new activities that their favorite character is doing, just like seeing cartoons respect and obey their parents.
Also one of the best benefits that televisions can bring to your family is the bonding time that it can bring to the family. Wrapping it all up, with proper guidance from parents and guardians television can be also Men’s Bestfriend!
